Fun Catholic Facts……the priest who invented the bulletproof vest
Father Casimir Zeglen, a Polish-born Catholic priest living in Chicago, invented an early practical silk bulletproof vest in the late 19th century.
The Inventor and Inspiration
- Who: Father Casimir Zeglen.
- Inspiration: The 1893 assassination of Chicago Mayor Carter Harrison Sr. deeply troubled Zeglen and motivated him to find a way to protect people from gun violence.
- Precursor Research: His work was partly inspired by observations from an Arizona surgeon, Dr. George E. Goodfellow, who noted that dense layers of silk fabric could sometimes catch or slow down bullets and buckshot.
How the Vest Worked
- Material: Zeglen developed a flexible, multi-layered fabric made largely of tightly woven, strong silk strands combined with materials like wool, hair, linen, and felt.
- Mechanism: The dense layers were stitched in a specific arrangement designed to absorb and distribute the kinetic energy of slow-moving handgun projectiles used at the time.
- Demonstration: Zeglen famously proved that his invention worked by wearing the material and publicly allowing himself to be shot.
- Production: He later partnered with Polish inventor Jan Szczepanik around 1901 to mechanize the manufacturing process for the silk fabric before patenting versions of the design in 1897 and 1898.
