Parish News for 16 / 17 May 2026 – Ascension of Our Lord (Year A)

📢 Parish Notices

🔥 Pentecost – Wear Red!

Next weekend (23 & 24 May) we will celebrate PENTECOST.

Parishioners are encouraged to wear something RED to symbolize the Holy Spirit and commemorate the “tongues of fire” that descended on the Apostles in the Book of Acts.

The vibrant colour represents the fiery energy, passion, and zeal the Holy Spirit brings to the Church — often called the Church’s “birthday.”

The tradition carries several deep meanings:

  • The Tongues of Fire
The Holy Spirit appeared as flames resting above the heads of the disciples, empowering them to speak in different languages.
  • The Birth of the Church
Pentecost marks the day the disciples were filled with courage to spread the Gospel, effectively launching the global Christian Church.
  • Witness and Boldness
Red is also the colour of martyrs — those who witnessed for their faith. Wearing it shows a readiness to boldly share God’s love and remain open to the Spirit’s guidance.

Historically, clergy wear red vestments during Pentecost Masses, and many congregations invite the entire parish family to wear red as a sign of unity.

The word “martyr” literally means “witness.”

“Pentecost is the Church’s coronation day, when God’s Spirit fills His people and sends them into the world.”
— Pope Benedict XVI

800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St Francis

On 10 January, in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels at the Porziuncola, the Franciscan Family began the VIII Centenary of the Transit (Death) of St Francis of Assisi.

This marks the final stage of the journey begun in 2023, reliving the final years of the Poor Man of Assisi’s earthly life.

The opening rite began with a symbolic gesture recalling the reconciliation between the Bishop and Podestà of Assisi. A candle — representing humanity marked by conflict and fragility — was carried into the Basilica and lit from the Paschal Candle, symbolizing the light of the Risen Christ.

The light was then brought to six stations within the Basilica, each entrusted to one of the six branches of the Franciscan Family.
