Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union). The month of May is recognised as Africa Month.
Theme for 2026:
“Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems”
Up to one-third of Africa’s population lacks basic drinking water services. Water sustainability in Africa remains a critical focus area due to:
- rapid population growth,
- climate change, and
- infrastructure challenges.
The continent faces both physical and economic water scarcity, requiring strategies such as:
- wastewater reuse,
- catchment protection, and
- community-based water schemes.

By virtue of our Baptism, we are all called to serve in the Church and participate in the ministry of Jesus in our own unique way, thereby making society more human and more Christian.
We thank all those who work in ministries within our parish. Through their dedication, sacrifice, time, and love for the faith, they help our parish fulfil Christ’s command to make disciples in the world.
We also thank their families, who by extension become part of the ministry through their own sacrifices.
May the good work God has begun in you be brought to a fruitful conclusion.
✝ 800th Anniversary of the Transitus of St Francis (Continued)
At the conclusion of the celebration, words from Pope Leo XIV addressed to the General Ministers of the Franciscan Family were read.
The Holy Father reflected on how the witness of St Francis continues to speak to a world marked by wars and division:
“In this age, marked by so many seemingly interminable wars, by internal and social divisions that create mistrust and fear, he continues to speak, not because he offers technical solutions, but because his life points to the authentic source of peace.”
The Pope also invited the faithful to allow themselves to be guided by St Francis along the path of reconciliation and peace:
“St Francis, our brother, you who eight hundred years ago went to meet the sovereign judge as a man at peace, intercede so that we too may be able to reconcile with God, with ourselves, with others, and with creation.”
The Transitus forms part of the wider Franciscan Jubilee journey commemorating:
- the approval of the Rule and Christmas at Greccio (2023),
- the Stigmata (2024), and
- the Canticle of the Creatures (2025).
