🎃 Halloween and it’s Catholic connection…
Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It is at the beginning of the observance of All Hallowtide, the time in the Christian liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
In popular – secular culture, Halloween has become a celebration of horror and is associated with the macabre and the supernatural.
Many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain. Some theories go further and suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallows’ Day, along with its eve, by the Church. Other academics say Halloween began independently as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallows’ Day. Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century, and then through American influence various Halloween customs spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
🕯️ Remembering Our Deceased Loved Ones
Traditionally during the month of November we remember and pray for our dear ones who have already returned home to God. Those who have gone before us are still part of our families and the Church – and we keep them in our hearts and minds.
The beginning of November marks this time:
- 1st November is the Feast of All Saints
- 2nd November the Feast of All Souls
The ways in which we will do this in our parish are as follows…
- There will be a list at the main entrance of the Church on which we can write ONLY the names of those who have passed away in the past year: 1st November 2025 to 31st October 2026. They will be remembered during the month of November.
- There will be, from next week onwards, mortuary list envelopes available at the entrances of the Church. You are invited to place the names of deceased dear ones in the envelope together with your donation and place them in the collection bags. These names will be gathered and Masses will be offered for them every week as from January 2027, therefore, 52 Masses will be celebrated for them in 2027.
