🛡 Creating a Safe Environment for All
On 4 July 2026, our parish hosted a Child Safeguarding Workshop for catechists, PPC members, and representatives from neighbouring parishes.
The workshop highlighted our shared responsibility to create the safest possible environment for children, young people, and vulnerable adults. It also explained the important distinction between Child Safeguarding and Child Protection.
1. Child Safeguarding
Definition:
The proactive steps organisations and communities take to prevent harm to children and create safe environments.
Focus:
- Prevention
- Culture
- Systems
Key Question:
“How do we make sure abuse never happens here?”
What it includes:
- Policies and codes of conduct
- Staff training
- Safe recruitment and background checks
- Risk assessments and safe environments
- Appropriate supervision ratios
- Online safety measures
- Teaching everyone to recognise risks
- Promoting a culture of respect and accountability
Analogy:
Like putting fences around a swimming pool and teaching children to swim before anyone falls in.
2. Child Protection
Definition:
The actions taken when a child is already at risk of harm or has been harmed.
While safeguarding focuses on prevention, child protection responds when intervention is required to ensure a child’s safety and wellbeing.
