🏥 The Catholic Church & Healthcare

The Catholic Church is the largest non-governmental healthcare provider in the world, managing more than 5,500 hospitals and countless clinics. It pioneered the concept of charitable public hospitals and continues to provide essential healthcare, particularly in poor and rural communities.

Historical Origins and Legacy

The systematic, charitable hospital originated in the early centuries of Christianity. Inspired by Christ’s command to care for the sick and welcome the stranger, Christians established institutions where medical care was available to everyone.

  • Medieval Foundations: Religious orders, particularly the Benedictines, made care of the sick a central part of their mission.
  • Global Spread: Priests and religious sisters established many of the first hospitals throughout North America and Africa.

The Church Today

The Church continues to play a major role in global healthcare.

  • Operates an estimated 26% of the world’s healthcare facilities.
  • Approximately 65% of Catholic hospitals are located in developing countries.
  • In the United States, Catholic hospitals care for one in every six hospitalised patients.
  • In parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the Church provides up to 70% of healthcare services, often being the only medical provider available.

Requests for Hospital Visits & Anointing

For centuries, Catholic priests have served as hospital chaplains.

Within our Archdiocese, hospitals are entrusted to the parish in whose area they are situated.

Our parish ministers to:

  • Panorama Mediclinic
  • Karl Bremer Hospital

If you or a family member is admitted to either hospital or requires the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the parish office as soon as possible.

It is also possible to receive the Sacrament before admission to hospital or prior to an operation.

🙏 Eucharistic Adoration

Please note that the Adoration Chapel will remain closed for the School Winter Break until:

📅 Tuesday, 21 July 2026
