Corpus Christi Reflection

“God is as really present in the consecrated Host as He is in the glory of Heaven.”
St Francis of Assisi

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we are reminded of the Church’s faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and invited to deepen our love and reverence for this great gift.

Mass Etiquette

Throughout the world there is a growing lack of attentiveness and reverence for the church, the sacred space, and the presence of God in the Eucharist.

For Catholics, the Mass is the most important act of worship, where we give thanks to God and acknowledge the many blessings He has bestowed upon us.

Just as we prepare carefully for important events such as weddings, funerals, sporting events, or the theatre, we should prepare ourselves well for Mass and conduct ourselves reverently while in church.

On Receiving Holy Communion

Immediate Consumption
The Host should be consumed immediately before turning away or walking from the minister.

Reverence
If receiving in the hand, step slightly to the side while facing the altar and reverently consume the Host before returning to your seat.

Theological Importance
The Church strictly prohibits walking away while holding the Eucharist. This helps prevent accidental dropping of the sacred species and safeguards against sacrilege.

General Mass Etiquette

  • Arrive early
  • Dress modestly
  • Silence your cellphone
  • Observe the one-hour Eucharistic fast before Communion
  • Participate actively in the Mass
  • Save conversations for outside the church

“God may be calling you – but it probably won’t be on your cell phone.”
