⛪ Mass Etiquette
Observing these straightforward guidelines helps ensure a respectful and spiritually focused environment for everyone.
Reverence & Preparation
Fast Before Communion
Refrain from eating or drinking (except water or medicine) for one hour before receiving the Eucharist.
Arrive Early
Be in your pew a few minutes before Mass begins in order to prepare spiritually.
Silence is Golden
Turn off or silence all cell phones and avoid unnecessary conversation in the foyer and church before, during, or immediately after Mass.
Genuflect and Bow
As you enter and leave your pew, genuflect toward the tabernacle as a sign of respect for the Real Presence of Christ.
During Mass
Dress Modestly
Please dress appropriately and respectfully. Avoid items such as peak caps and sunglasses.
Participate Actively
Join in the prayers, responses, and singing, and stand, sit, or kneel with the rest of the congregation.
No Food or Gum
Chewing gum and bringing snacks or drinks (except water for infants or health reasons) are generally not appropriate.
The Sign of Peace
Keep greetings brief and focused on those immediately around you.
Receiving Communion
Preparation
Only Catholics should receive the Eucharist. Those not receiving may remain in their pew or come forward with arms crossed over their chest to receive a blessing.
Receiving Communion
Consume the Eucharist immediately and do not walk away while holding the Host.
Departure
Stay Until the End
Please remain until the final blessing and the priest has recessed before leaving.
Tidy Up
Take any bulletins, tissues, or rubbish with you and return missals and hymn books neatly to their places.
🔒 Security Concerns
Due to the recent theft of toilet fixtures from the men’s toilet, previous incidents involving unauthorised persons in the ladies’ toilet, and recent robberies at churches in Cape Town:
The toilets will remain locked during Confession times and Masses.
If you need to use the facilities:
- During Mass, the key will be available from one of the ushers at the back of the church.
- During Confession times, the key will be available from the Parish House.
This practice is already followed in several parishes throughout the Archdiocese.
